Abstract:
Mixed methods research is often used in studies involving young people. One of the key social problems in Russia today is low birth rates. However, there is little mixed methods research done into young people's ideas about family and parenthood. This paper presents the results of research into the views on family and parenthood held by young people in Russia. The study uses convergent mixed methods design. We analysed data from two quantitative and one qualitative study. The use of mixed methods research has enabled us to conclude that family is one of the key life values for young people in Russia. They hold a positive image of family in their minds. Thus at the cognitive and emotional levels, there is a stable belief in the importance of family and children. This enables us to speak about the absence of a fundamental crisis of the family institution in Russian society, despite vigorous political and scientific debate on the issue. This study also offers further research directions based on the findings and results.
