Abstract:
The article considers the derivatives from Proto-Slavic ``pedliti `to stretch' functioning in the Russian dialects and some other Slavic languages (particularly in Belarusian). Special attention is paid to the Russian dialectal word `clumsy, improvident person', `sloven', `foolish, muddle-headed person' and its variants (and so on). The earlier version on its.derivation from the word nenbmo `intelligence' mentioned in the ofensky language (the language of roving tradesmen) is refuted. Its attribution to the {*}pedliti word family is substantiated. Clarifications and additions to the etymology of other words are suggested - Belarusian `legs', Russian dialect `front part of the shirt', `breasts' and others.
