Abstract:

The article is devoted to examination of the idioms with the meaning `a woman (infrequently a man), whose husband (or wife) is temporarily absent', which can be found in European and Asian languages (mostly in Slavic, Romance and Germanic). The author studies different ways of implementation of this meaning ( temporary widow, white widow, summer widow etc.). Special attention is given to the idioms based on the image of straw: straw widow. The meanings of such idioms vary in European languages ('abandoned wife (husband)', `maiden (bachelor)', `unfair bride', `a woman who gave birth to a child, not being married' etc.). The imagery of these idioms also varies ( grass widow, straw groom, tow widow). Having critically studied the versions of grass widow genesis, the author proposes his own version of combination of two processes: 1) independent initiation of image-bearing idioms in different European languages (especially in dialects); 2) tracing the German image-bearing idiom Strohwitue to literary languages.
