Abstract:
Replication casting process is provided by authors for manufacturing the open-pore aluminum foams with advanced performances such as stability and repeatability of foam structure with porosity over 60\%. A simple foam structure model based on interaction between sodium chloride solid particles poor wetted by melted aluminum with the formation of air pockets (or ``air collars{''}) is proposed for permeability of porous material. The equation for minimum pore radius of replicated aluminium foam is derived. According to proposed model the main assumption of permeability model consists in concentration of flow resistance at circular aperture of radius rmin. The permeability of aluminium open-pore foams is measured using transformer oil as the fluid, changing the fractions of initial sodium chloride. Measured values of minimum pore size are close to theoretically predicted regardless of the particle shape. The expression for permeability of replicated aluminium foam derived on the basis of ``bottleneck{''} model of porous medium agrees well with the experimental data. The obtained data are applied commercially for production filter cells and pneumatic silencers.
