Abstract:
The worldwide implementation of the distributed generation (DG) based on the renewable energy sources (RES) and direct current systems leads to the corresponding spread of the power electronics. Semiconductor power rectifiers, inverters and full-function power converters are essential components of the modern types of generation. Nevertheless, the power converters may also provide a number of great advantages if used for the synchronous generation operating on the alternating current. The paper gives an analytical review of different aspects of application of modern semiconductor power converter for the synchronous DG. The power convertor utilization can sufficiently increase the performance and energy efficiency of the synchronous generator unit as well as simplify its operation and maintenance. In addition, the power electronics may increase the power output, control start and shutdown of the generator and provide an advanced short-circuit protection. The aspects presented are in the sphere of interests of DG stakeholders and distribution utilities providing a grid interconnection to such DG. The analysis is supposed to be useful for construction of new power generation, renovation of existing power plants as well as for the energy efficiency improvement.
