Abstract:
Feasibility of eddy-current and coercive-force measurements of the wear resistance to abrasion and sliding friction of the U8 steel and rail steel (with 0.75\% of carbon and 0.91\% of manganese) with the thin-plate pearlite structure has been studied. Only the combination of the two NDT techniques enables one to detect in the eutectoid steel with a fairly good reliability the presence of the structure in question, which results from the pearlite transformation at 500-550 degreesC and has higher parameters of strength and wear resistance, as compared with other pearlite structures. The effect of the anneal at 650 degreesC on the hardness, wear resistance, coercive force, and the generalized eddy-current parameter of eutectoid steels that initially had the structure of the thin-plate pearlite is discussed. The electromagnetic, strength, and frictional properties of pearlite structures with different grain dimensions and morphologies of the carbide phase have been analyzed in comparison.
