Abstract:
The structure, properties, and delayed failure (DF) of Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-Co maraging steels (MASs) were studied. The DF of the MASs was shown to be a two-factor process proceeding under mechanical and chemical actions. The study of the initial stages of decomposition of the supersaturated solid solution showed that the DF of 01N18M4T and 03N18K3M3T maraging steels developed at a high crack growth rale (1.3 × 10-6 and 6.3 × 10 -5 m/s, respectively) via intercrystalline cleavage. The DF was found to be controlled by the aging stage described by the Johnson-Mehl equation with a constant of the time exponent n = 0.12-0.17. According to the reported data, this stage corresponded to the formation of Guinier-Preston zones. The 03N18K3M3T steel underwent DF and had a virtually one-component {110} α crystallographic texture. This texture was retained in the austenite after hot forging and was inherited by the martensite due to the oriented characters of the α ⇆ γ transformations and the decomposition of the supersaturated solid solution. The aging stage at n = 0.12-0.17 was detected only in the textured MASs. A decrease in the sharpness of texture in the MASs is considered to be one of the methods of increasing their resistance to DF. Copyright © 2003 by MAIK "Nauka/ Interperiodica".
