Abstract:
New high-nitrogen iron-chromium alloys (0.424-1.281% N and 14.93-23.85% Cr) and a laboratory iron-chromium-nickel alloy (18% Cr-2% Ni) were tested for general corrosion and corrosion cracking in a 20% NaCl aqueous solution, and the results obtained were compared with those for commercial steels 08Kh18N10T and 12Kh18AG20. With the test times up to 590 h, the new high-nitrogen steels surpass the chromium-nickel 08Kh18N10T steel in the resistance to general corrosion. The Kh18N2A10 alloy containing 2% Ni is more susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) than the nickel-free alloy 0Kh21A10. The character of the crack development upon SCC was estimated using X-ray diffraction examination of the fracture surfaces. The new alloys were shown to be promising substitutes for the conventional stainless steels in NaCl aqueous solutions. Copyright © 2001 by MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".
