Abstract:
Aging processes of commercial maraging steels 01N18M4T and 03N18K3M3T were investigated. Resistivity measurements and differential thermal analysis were used in the investigations. The steels were tested for the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and delayed failure and examined fractographically. The crack-growth rates and apparent activation energies of delayed failure and decomposition of solid solutions were calculated. Cracks propagated intergranually, in a brittle way, and most rapidly in the 03N18K3M3T steel quenched from 820°C and aged at 400°C. The resistivity data (approximated with the use of the Johnson-Mehl equation) and the calculated constant of time exponent showed that no ordinary diffusion known to cause nucleation and growth of phases were observed at the early stages (350 to 450°C) of aging. In this case, a short-range ordering process is possible, resulting in the formation of zones enriched with nickel. In steels significantly susceptible to delayed failure, this process may be superimposed by the formation of a metastable phase. The early decomposition stage, which noticeably decreases the rate of failure, can be suppressed with the use of tree quenching cycles from adequately high temperatures.
