Abstract:
IF A VIBRATED BED OF SMALL PARTICLES IS TREATED AS A RIGID POROUS BODY THROUGH WHICH GAS PERCOLATES, THEN THE MAXIMUM FLUCTUATIONS IN THE GAS BENEATH THE BED ARE GIVEN BY GDGRM/X/SUB O/ EQUALS MINUS GRG PLUS GRAGW/SUP 2/ SIN GWL/SUB M/.HOWEVER, EXPERIMENTS SHOW THAT THE ABOVE EXPRESSION HOLDS ONLY UNTIL TGDGR/SUB M//X/SUB 0/ DOES NOT EXCEED THE WEIGHT OF THE BED COLUMN.WHEN GDGR/SUB M//X/SUB 0/ EXCEEDS GRG, THE VIBRATING BED WIDENS AND ITS RESISTANCE BECOMES SMALLER THAN THAT PREDICTED FROM A MODEL OF A RIGID POROUS BODY, BUT HIGHER THAN THE RESISTANCE OF THE BED WHEN FLUIDIZED BY A STEADY FLOW OF GAS.THIS IS DUE TO THE STRUCTURAL AND KINEMATIC FEATURES OF THE VIBRATED FLUIDIZED BED.
