Abstract:
The equivalence principle of static and dynamic disorders is applied to demonstrate that the "crystalline" and "vitreous" versions of the Urbach rule are the limiting cases of the general exponential dependence of optical absorption coefficient around the ultraviolet absorption edge. The temperature boundaries of the realizability of the vitreous Urbach rule are determined. The relation between the basic characteristic parameters E0 and T0 of the vitreous version of the Urbach rule is derived, and their physical interpretation is given. The main structural factors responsible for the E0 parameter are analyzed on the basis of the available experimental data for a number of vitreous materials with dominant static disorder. The T0 values and temperature coefficients of the band gap are determined, and the lower boundaries of the temperature ranges, where the behavior of the fundamental absorption edge is described by the vitreous Urbach rule, are evaluated for various glasses.
