Abstract:
New complex oxides Ba7MgMn5O18 and Ba 8MgMn6O21, which belong to the Ba 3n + 3mMgnMn3m + nO9m + 6n homologous series (n = 3, m = 4; n = 3, m = 5, respectively), have been prepared using a standard ceramic procedure. Both oxides have been indexed based on a hexagonal unit cell with parameters a = 10.018(3) Å, c = 30.36(1) Å, V = 2638.7 Å3 for Ba7MgMn5O18 and a = 10.024(3) Å, c = 17.626(7) Å, V = 1533.8 Å3 for Ba8MgMn6O21. The magnetic susceptibility measured in the range 2-860 K, in both cases, follows the Curie-Weiss law above 250 K. Magnetic moments per paramagnetic center are slightly higher than a theoretical value for the Mn4+ cation.
