Abstract:
Solid-state synthesis from strontium carbonate and the oxides NiO and MnO2 yielded new complex oxides Sr4NiMn2O 9 and Sr3NiMnO6.36 of the family of quasi-one-dimensional compounds A3n + 3mA′n B n + 3mO6n + 9m. Both oxides are incommensurate and may be characterized as composed of two sub-cells with the same parameters a, but with different c: a = 9.611(3) Å, c1 = 3.950(2) Å, C 2 = 2.569(1) Å, c1/c2 = 1.538 for Sr 4NiMn2O9 and a = 9.567(3) Å, c 1 = 3.872(2) Å, c2 = 2.600(1) Å, c 1/c2 = 1.489 for Sr3NiMnO6.36. Magnetic susceptibility χ measurements for Sr4NiMn 2O9 were interpreted on the assumption of the existence of exchange-bound dimers Mn4+-Mn4+ and paramagnetic centers Ni2+. The plot of the real part of Sr4NiMn 2O9 magnetic susceptibility versus temperature shows a maximum at 4.5 K, which presumably arises from the appearance of antiferromagnetism below this temperature.
