Abstract:
The mixed oxide LiMnO2, which contains the Mn3+ ion (3d4), was characterized by magnetic measurements and Mn3s photoelectron spectroscopy. From these data, it was concluded that only high-spin Mn3+ ions occur in LiMnO2 at room temperature. It is suggested that the Heisenberg-Dirac-van-Vleck model is applicable to the description of the magnetic properties of LiMnO2. Variants of exchange-bonded clusters are considered in terms of this model, and exchange parameters are calculated. Examination of the crystal structure of LiMnO2 implies that linear chains of finite length are the most probable units of the magnetic structure of this compound.
