Abstract:
It is shown that for x less than equivalent to 0. 02 V//1// minus //xCu//xO//2 solid solutions (0 less than equivalent to x less than equivalent to 0. 04) are isostructural with pure vanadium dioxide. In the investigated samples a semiconductor-metal phase transition is observed. For x greater than 0. 02 a redistribution of the copper ions occurs. Copper additives lower the semiconductor-metal phase transition temperature and stabilize the intermediate insulating phase. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of the semiconducting phase of V//1// minus //xCu//xO//2 attests to the formation of paramagnetic centers as a result of breakage of V**4** plus -V**4** plus bonds due to charge compensation. The number of paramagnetic centers is proportional to the copper concentration in the solid solution for x less than equivalent to 0. 02.
