Abstract:
The surface and bulk solidification of strips of Fe76.1Nb3.0Cu1.0Si13.8B 6.1 amorphous alloy is considered. In the superfast quenching of melts, the formation of crystalline layers containing an ordered bcc phase with texture of type {100} is possible at the surface of the amorphous strips on the contact and free sides. The layer thickness on the different sides of the strip depends on their production technology and the preparation of the initial melt. The parameters of the bcc crystals formed directly from the melt in conditions of maximum possible supercooling and in annealing rapidly quenched strip differ significantly, on account of the different structural state of the liquid and amorphous phases and, correspondingly, the different thermodynamic conditions of nucleation and growth. A model of bilateral surface crystallization of rapidly quenched Fe-Nb-Cu-Si-B strips is proposed on the basis of oriented heterogeneous nucleation in the surface layers of the initial melt and the subsequent crystal growth in the volume of the liquid layer bounded by motion of the temperature front corresponding to the vitrification interval. ©1999 by Allerton Press, Inc.
