Abstract:
Dissolution of volatile molybdenum pentachloride, using a bell-trap, in alkali chloride-based melts gave the unstable octahedral MoCl6-complex ion. Its electronic consisted of intense charge transfer bands and the expected single d-d transition. Studies were made in the melts (LiCl-KCl, NaCl-CsCl, NaCl-KCl-CsCl eutectics and NaCl-KCl equimolar mixture) between 450 and 750°C. The absorption spectra of the reaction in these melts were recorded and the progress of dissolution and subsequent evaporation of Mo(V) chloride was followed by in situ spectroscopy measurements. © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
