Abstract:
The relationship between chemical bonding, defect structure, and deformation / fracture behavior of crystalline solids is analyzed by using of experimental data and results of the first principle calculations of electronic structure. Cleavable, but plastic fcc-metal iridium and single crystals of titanium dichalcogenides, where dislocation plasticity could suppress fracture process under point load, have been chosen as the model materials. It was shown that accomplishment of the Rice-Thompson cleavage criteria predicts of their brittle fracture, but does not prohibit dislocation plasticity in these materials.
