Abstract:
Optical microscopes are used to study deformation traces and cracks appearing on the side surface of iridium single crystals in tension along <100> and <110>. Anisotropy of the plastic properties is manifest in differences in the yield point, UTS and deformation at rupture. Anisotropy was not observed under compression. Analysis of the traces of deformation shows that in iridium it is due to slip with a geometry similar to that observed in metals with a fcc lattice.
