Abstract:

Coal tar pitch is characterized by high service properties. Optimal combination of the coke-forming capability and low viscosity in melt provides advantages of this pitch as compared to other kinds of the binding materials for various carbon-containing compounds subjected to carbonization. Therefore, this pitch is the best kind of electrode binder. The electrode pitch is widely utilized in aluminum industry In connection with this, selection of efficient technology for manufacturing the pitch has been considered. Vacuum distillation of coal tar and other processes have been discussed. Efficiency of low-temperature thermal oxidation of raw material is shown.
