Abstract:
The author has demonstrated the essential differences in condensation of aromatic hydrocarbons during thermostatting and thermooxidation of pitch. In contrast to thermolysis reactions that occur in the liquid phase, reaction of aromatic hydrocarbons with oxygen occurs in the steam-gas phase regardless of the method of oxidation. Oxidation combined with heat treatment is a universal method for controlling the quality of pitch that permits a selective increase in molecular weight of the hydrocarbons as a function of the process and oxidation conditions. Oxidation of pitch with oxygen-enriched air is the most effective method for increasing the α-fraction in it, during which the effect of additional oxygen manifests itself particularly in the initial period of oxidation. Oxidation has an adverse effect on the degree of anisotropy of pitch at a temperature close to the temperature of development and growth of mesophase nucleii.
