Abstract:
A model was developed for the mass transfer occurring during liquid-liquid extraction under conditions of spontaneous interfacial convection. Using the model 12 liquid-liquid extraction systems were investigated. From the relationships developed it follows that the characteristic dimension of the convective cells increases while the rate of circulation of the liquid decreases with decrease of the gradient of the interfacial tension and of the mass transfer driving force. For most of the investigated systems the circulation rate is of the order of a few to a few tens of centimeters/sec, while the cell dimension varies from a few to a few tens of micrometers. This leads to rapid surface renewal which accelerates mass transfer during extraction.
