Abstract:
One way of improving the efficiency of liquid extraction is by the selection of a regime which provides for the appearance of self-organized interfacial convection on the interface between the liquid phases as a consequence of the development of Marangoni instability. The authors carried out an investigation of extraction systems in which self-organized interfacial convection appears. The experiments on a variety of organic systems were carried out in a diffusion cell with stirring and a flat surface separating two immiscible liquids of equal diffusion volume. The appearance of self-organized interfacial convection was indicated by a change in the relative Sherwood number, which is equal to the ratio of the total mass flux to the mass flux due to molecular diffusion in the absence of self-organized convection. Plots are presented of the dependence of the Sherwood number on the Marangoni number for the systems tested. The curves in general exhibited a bifurcation delineating the onset of self-organized convection.
