Abstract:
The authors studied mass transfer of acetic acid from heptane (continuous phase) into water (disperse phase). The viscosity of heptane, mu //c, was varied by additions of up to 30 vol. % of vacuum oil (VO), and that of water, mu //d, by additions of up to 35 mass % of sucrose. The acetic acid concentration was approx. 0. 5 kg-mole/liter. The experiments showed that increase of viscosity of the continuous phase to 18% was not accompanied by noticeable changes of the intensity of SSC. Upon further increase of viscosity the intensity of SAC decreases and mass transfer becomes controlled by diffusion. The experimental results are consistent with views on the intensity of mass transfer in the presence of the Marangoni effect according to which the intensification factor of mass transfer is proportional to the Marangoni number.
