Abstract:
1. New high-strength corrosion-resistant steels have been developed for medical instruments on the basis of aging martensite (ZI 90-VI), stable austenite (ZI 98-VI), and metastable austenite (ZI 126-Sh). 2. Rupture strength of wire blanks (0.8 mm in diameter) made of the developed steels and subjected to routine treatment cycle (hardening—cold plastic deformation—aging) is 400–800 MPa higher than in steels commonly used in medical instruments (40Kh13 and 12Kh18N1OT). 3. Drawing of wire blanks made of metastable austenite steels (12Kh18N1OT and ZI 126-Sh) produces gradient distribution of phase components over the wire cross-section, the surface of the wire remains austenitic, while the martensite contribution rises centripetally. 4. General and stress corrosion resistance of the ZI 90-VI, ZI 98-VI, and ZI 126-Sh steels as measured in 3% sodium chloride solution is no less than in the 12Kh18N1OT steel. 5. Hardening of the ZI 90-VI and ZI 98-VI steels induced by deformation aging is due to release of intermetallic compounds, the type of the compound depending on the steel composition. © 1995, Plenum Publishing Corporation.
