Abstract:
Crystal structure of the ternary Ce2Fe17-xMnx compounds with x = 0-3.0 was studied at 293 K using X-ray and neutron diffraction methods. Analysis of the neutron diffraction patterns reveals that atoms of 3d transition metals occupy crystallographic positions in the rhombohedral lattice (space group R3̄m) with different probabilities. Manganese atoms predominantly take 6c positions and iron atoms occupy, 9d positions. An assumption is made that the nonrandom character of distribution of Mn and Fe atoms is one of the main reasons for the concentrational magnetic transitions to take place in the system studied.
