Abstract:
The presence of automatic check and diagnostics facilities is an indispensable condition which must be satisfied by a modern flexible machine tool module. Such facilities include, in particular, systems for automatic detection of cutting tool breakage during the machining process. Many shortcomings are inherent in these systems. The main shortcoming is the need to machine a trial component. When the trial component is being machined, the reference current curve is recorded in the memory of the system; then, in the course of machining of each subsequent component, the current is continuously measured and compared with this curve. The need to record a reference current curve makes the system complicated and reduces the production rate of the machine tool. The authors consider the results of investigations aimed at development of a tool breakage detection system based on the drive current which is free from this shortcoming. The experimental part of the investigations was carried out on a modernized model 1E365B lathe whose main drive consisted of a two-stage change-gearbox and thyristor-regulated electric drive with a MCU-180L-21-35 direct current motor of 21 kW capacity.
