Abstract:
The diffusion formation of macroscopic intermediate solid phases is shown to be impossible upon competitive growth of an intermediate liquid phase. The results obtained in studies of contact melting in a nonstationary diffusion regime make it possible to estimate the composition of the liquid interlayer at interphase boundaries. It has been ascertained that in the Bi-In system at temperatures corresponding to the field of existence of intermediate solid phases, the concentration range of the liquid interlayer is close to the equilibrium range of homogeneity of the liquid phase in the equilibrium phase diagram and has a tendency to extension via the formation of solutions supersaturated with bismuth. In the model that is suggested, the intermediate solid phases are formed as a result of crystallization of the metastable part of the liquid interlayer rather than diffusionally.
