Abstract:
Phase equilibrium in the system comprising polystyrene and di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate showing an upper critical solution temperature was studied under shear field and in static conditions. An inversion of the effect that the shear field has on phase equilibrium was discovered: compatibility of the components in the flow increases for dilute and semiconcentrated solutions and decreases for concentrated solutions. It was shown that the concentration of the polymer at inversion point decreases with an increase in molecular mass of the polymer and shear rate. A mechanism is proposed to explain the influence of mechanical field on the liquid-liquid phase segregation in polymer solutions.
