Abstract:
The enthalpy of dissolution of polycarbonate (PC) samples with different degrees of crystallinity in chloroform and dimethylformamide and the enthalpy of dilution of homogeneous solutions and heterogeneous mixtures in an excess of the respective solvents were measured at 298 K. The enthalpy of mixing for the systems calculated from the thermochemical cycle is essentially negative over the entire range of compositions and is dependent on the degree of crystallinity of the PC. A method based on analysis of the concentration dependences of the enthalpy of dilution was proposed for separating the contributions to the enthalpy of mixing from the interaction of the components, disruption of the crystalline ordered regions in semicrystalline polymers, and devitrification of their amorphous regions. The values of the Flory-Huggins interaction enthalpy parameter were estimated at -0.63 and -0.40 for solutions of PC in chloroform and dimethylformamide, respectively.
