Abstract:
An influence or chemical composition and heat treatment on the magnetic and magnetoresistive properties of rapidly quenched Co-Cu ribbons exhibiting giant magnetoresistance (GMR) were studied. Maximum GMR was found for 20 wt \% Co samples annealed at 540 degreesC. The microstructure of ribbons was found to be substantially inhomogeneous with two types of Co-containing inclusions. The magnetic properties of the ribbons are determined by inclusions with typical dimensions of 10(2) nm. The GMR of the ribbons is determined by other inclusions with elements of superparamagnetic behavior and dimensions less than 5 nm.
