Abstract:
We show that the rate of photochemical molybdenum reduction in aqueous polymer-salt solutions including ammonium heptamolybdate and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) depends on the process parameters. The. C, p reduction occurs more rapidly with a polymer of a lower molar mass and at reduced temperatures, which is, respectively, associated with the release of steric hindrances for the polymer component and with the increase in the stability of excited species generated by UV radiation. A likely mechanism of the oscillating reactions of the reduction and reoxidation of molybdenum is discussed. A photogalvanic potential appears between the irradiated and light-shielded solutions of the same initial composition. EPR shows that unpaired electrons are generated by irradiation in the polymer-salt compositions; these unpaired electrons are located on the inorganic ion and the polymer macromolecule. This is an argument for support of the radical-ion mechanism of the reactions. The possibility of photochemical reactions occurring in systems containing polymer components of different nature is discussed.
