Abstract:
Interaction of cadmium and copper salts with poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(ethylene glycol), and poly-vinylpyrrolidone in the aqueous solution at 298 K is studied by the calorimetric method. The enthalpy of the interaction with polymers is shown to be negative for cadmium ions and positive for copper ions. The experimental data are analyzed within the models describing the equilibrium of the formation of complexes with a central metal ion and the equilibrium of adsorption on polymer macromolecules. The thermodynamic parameters of the interaction are estimated. In the case of interaction with cadmium ions, the binding parameters calculated in terms of the above models appear to be close, suggesting a common complex formation mechanism in different limiting states. For copper ions, the situation is different, indicating a cooperative nature of binding in their complexes with polymers.
