Abstract:
The interaction of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with ammonium heptamolybdate in films and aqueous solutions within a wide composition range at 298 K was studied by calorimetry. It was shown that the enthalpy of component mixing in films is negative, thus suggesting that the energy of interaction in the polymer-salt composition is strong and that structural changes take place. The enthalpies of dissolution and dilution for solutions of polymer-salt systems with different compositions were measured. It was demonstrated that when the content of ammonium heptamolybdate in the compositions is small, the supermolecular structure of a partially crystalline polymer with a glassy amorphous part characteristic of PVA is preserved. At high salt contents in the composition, recrystallization occurs with the subsequent relaxation of the entropy of amorphous glassy regions in the polymer. The study of complex formation between PVA and ammonium heptamolybdate in dilute aqueous solutions demonstrated that this process is accompanied by heat release and can be regarded as a sterically hindered adsorption of PVA units on polyanions.
