Abstract:
Phase relations in the ammonium heptamolybdate-poly(vinylpyrrolidone)-water system have been studied. An isothermal section through the phase diagram at room temperature and a fragment of the composition-temperature diagram have been mapped. A combination of two types of phase separation has been found: amorphous-amorphous (yielding two liquid phases) and amorphous-crystalline (with separation of salt crystals) with a lower, and an upper, critical solution point, respectively. A field of homogeneous polymer-salt solutions exists in the system; the field widens in the region rich in the polymer and water when the system is exposed to light. The density, viscosity, and refractive index have been studied as functions of concentration. The existence boundaries of the homogeneous solution field determined in various ways are compared with one another. The probability of existence of mesomorphic entities here is lower than in the ammonium molybdatepoly(vinyl alcohol)-water system, because poly(vinylpyrrolidone) is a nongelling amorphous polymer.
