Abstract:
Phase relations of the ammonium vanadate-poly(vinyl alcohol)-water system were studied. An isothermal section at room temperature of the phase diagram was obtained. Visual observations and instrumental techniques were employed: solution densities, their dynamic viscosities, and refractive indices were studied as a function of concentration. The regions of existence of homogeneous aqueous solutions and the solutions on the basis of the polymer, the heterogeneous field, were identified. The solubility of the polymeric component in water increases substantially in the presence of the salt. In contrast to an analogous system of ammonium heptamolybdate, in the system under study the salt solubility did not increase significantly in the daylight but it did increase after ultraviolet irradiation. With increasing water content in the solid samples, the region of homogeneity of the polymer-based solutions did not expand. It was demonstrated that the different behavior of the two specified systems is mainly determined by the salt nature, namely, by the lower solubility of the vanadium salt, and the molybdenum(VI) incapability of forming crystal hydrates and its greater tendency to partial reduction in a polymer-containing medium. The system studied shows properties suggesting the formation of mesomorphic phases.
