Abstract:
The effect of severe plastic deformation by high-pressure torsion on the structure and properties of high-strength aluminum-based alloys is studied. Industrial alloys B96Ts1, 7050, and 01979 (the latter is produced by rapid solidification) of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu system are studied. Transmission electron microscopy shows that severe plastic deformation (SPD) of the alloys leads to a considerable refinement of their structure. Depending on the deformation conditions, the grain size in the B96Ts1 alloy varies from 400 to 150 rim. SPD has been found to cause a nonequilibrium phase, which does not precipitate under regular treatment conditions. Preliminary SPD is established to provide uniform decomposition of the supersaturated solid solution through out the bulk of grains without the formation of precipitation-free near-boundary zones.
