Abstract:
The effect of the glassy state of a polymer on the thermodynamic functions of its mixing with a solvent is studied. The concentration dependences of the enthalpy, Gibbs energy, and entropy of mixing are determined for polystyrene solutions in cyclohexane, ethylbenzene, and chloroform over the entire composition range. It is shown that the enthalpy and entropy of mixing are negative and the Gibbs energy of mixing is close to combinatorial irrespective of the solvent quality. A semi-empirical statistical model based on the concept of a loose metastable structure of polymeric glass is proposed, and the theoretical expressions for the contribution of the glassy state to all the thermodynamic functions of mixing are derived. The specific features are theoretically described for the behavior of the enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs energy of mixing; sorption isotherms; the change in the partial entropy of the solvent; and the concentration dependence of the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter in solutions of polymeric glasses.
