Abstract:
The water dissolution thermodynamic parameters have been determined for the acrylic acid-methylacrylate copolymers of different composition, in both the original (H-) and ionized (Na-) form. An increase in the acrylic acid content of copolymer molecules is shown to enhance the exothermic effects of the dissolution process and to increase the absolute Gibbs energies. The NaOH neutralization of the copolymer carboxyl groups causes their water mixing enthalpies to rise by an order of magnitude and increases the thermodynamic stability of the resulting solution. Meanwhile, the water mixing entropies of the ionized copolymers are virtually nil, i.e. the degree of ordering in the structures formed in the solution is little different from that of the starting components.
