Abstract:
Phase diagrams have been obtained and the calorimetric study has been performed for solutions of four glassy polymers having UCST: poly-1-vinylpyrazole - toluene, PS - cyclohexane, PS - decaline, PVA - tetrachloromethane. For all the cases the dissolution is accompanied by the heat release and the curvature sign of the concentrational dependence of the enthalpy of mixing is changed with the composition. In the composition region corresponding to UCST the second derivative of the enthalpy of mixing with respect to the composition is negative according to the thermodynamic criterion of UCST. The method of calculation of the enthalpy of mixing of glassy polymers with solvents is proposed based on the VNIQVAC stochastic model permitting ti divide the contributions related with the polymer - solvent interaction and related with initial loosen structure of a glassy polymer. The <> contribution is shown to be negative, while the interactions contribution is positive being a reason of UCST existence in systems under study.
