Abstract:
The surface structure of thermally polished soda-lime glass was characterized by depth profiling in combination with optically stimulated exoelectron emission spectroscopy and microhardness measurements. Microhardness was found to correlate with emission intensity. The depth profiles of emission intensity and microhardness demonstrate that the near-surface region is highly inhomogeneous. The top layer about 10 mu m thick contains reduced amounts of radiative centers and has a rigid network resembling that of quartz glass. The subsurface layer, extending from a 10- to 25-mu m depth, has a softer network. X-ray irradiation of the glass produces both intrinsic and extrinsic radiative centers in this layer: O-i(0) intrinsic centers related to nonbridging oxygens and (Fe3+)(-) and (Fe3+)(-)/R+ radiation-reduced-iron centers. The obtained results are used to develop a model of the inhomogeneous near-surface region in thermally polished glass. The model accounts for the higher strength of the top surface in comparison with the bottom surface.
