Abstract:
The composition and content of exchange cations on the surface and in the interior volume of different clays are studied. It is found that the atomic (ionic) composition of the surface of clay particles influences the adsorption and rheological properties of a suspension upon introduction of electrolytes. The possible exchange reactions between the molecules of the electrolyte and the ions of a clay particle are determined.
