Abstract:
The solubility of helium and the feasibility of flaw detection in polycrystalline palladium with a submicrocrystalline structure were studied by helium flaw detection (saturation of defects with helium) over the temperature and saturation pressure ranges 293-508 K and 0-25.5 MPa, respectively. The helium solubility isotherms had a step character with four ``plateaus.{''} The plateaus were shown to be caused by the sequential saturation of vacancy clusters formed during sample preparation with one, two, three, and four helium atoms. The energy of solution of helium in vacancy clusters changed from -0.028 +/- 0.005 eV for free clusters to 0.070 +/- 0.007 eV for clusters preliminarily filled by three helium atoms. The suggested model was used to obtain a semiempirical equation of multistep solubility isotherms and determine the concentration of vacancy clusters. The results are compared with those obtained by other authors.
