Abstract:
The kinetics of electrode processes in halide melts, containing beryllium, vanadium, niobium and hafnium were investigated over a wide range of temperatures and concentrations by combining galvanostatic computational and chronopotentiometric methods using a specially constructed automated electrochemical system. For the experimental conditions studied, anodic dissolution and cathodic deposition of these metals occur in the diffusion regime. The possibility for the co-existence of complexes with the studied metal in different oxidation states was confirmed by analysis of the red-ox processes in vanadium-, niobium- and hafnium-containing melts. Also, the conditions favourable for the formation of ions of a particular oxidation state were determined. The phenomena of anodic salt passivation and increased growth of the surface of cathodic deposit at high current densities were observed and the influence of the alkali metals formed at the cathode during the process was investigated.
