Abstract:
Based on an electrochemical approach to die synthesis of complex compounds, a new model technique for monitoring the transformations of reactants and for estimating the properties of reaction products in situ in the course of the reaction is proposed. Applied to the study of synthesis of molybdates and tungstates under the effect of an electric field, the technique made possible the detection of changes in the adhesiveness at interfaces and of non-Faradaic reaction behavior. A drastic difference in the behavior of polycrystalline reaction products and of the ceramics of the same origin is observed. A relation between the reaction rate and the electric field effect, on one hand, and the product porosity, on the other hand, is noted. The conclusion was drawn concerning the governing role of the interface composition and structure in covalent-ionic systems under study. The interfacial phenomena are likely to be responsible for the specific behavior of these systems in mass and electricity transfer.
