Abstract:
We analyzed rubisco content and activity in leaves of different stories and organs within limits of the same plant and in plants of eight genotypes of barley with different productivity (the wild type and cultivated forms), ripening time (early and middle-to-late), and spike structure (two-rowed and six-rowed). Differences in total cerboxylase activity per unit of area or per 1 g of biomass of leaves and nonfoliar organs within limits of plants of the same genotype were determined by the amount of rubisco, not by its specific activity. Nonfoliar organs contained 2.5-20 times less of the enzyme than leaves. In leaves, green elements of the spike and straw, both the amount of rubisco (in the wild type versus cultivated form) and its specific activity (in six-rowed versus two-rowed forms) varied in plants of different genotypes. However, changes in the level of specific activity of the enzyme were slight, and it was on the whole the most stable of all the studied characteristics of the photosynthetic apparatus.
