Abstract:
Iridium has a tendency to cleave during plastic deformation, thus, it can be used as a model material for the study of brittle transcrystalline fracture in f.c.c. metals. Evolution of transcrystalline cracks in bulk crystals and thin foils of iridium is considered in this paper. It is shown that transcrystalline cleavage is only observed in bulk crystals, while fracture mode of thin foils is ductile fracture.
