Abstract:
The effect of plane Couette flow on the isotropic medium-nematic phase transition in a suspension of needlelike solid particles was analyzed. The equality of chemical potentials and osmotic pressures in phases was accepted as the condition of stable coexistence of the phases provided that transverse hydrodynamic forces acting on particles are ignored. Magnitudes of chemical potentials and osmotic pressures were calculated in terms of free energy that was represented as the Onsager functional of the unary orientation distribution function. The distribution function was determined by the Focker-Planck equation. It was concluded that the shear flow promotes the formation of nematic phase with the interface positioned in the plane determined by the flow velocity and the direction of velocity variation.
