Abstract:
A study has been made of reversible orthokinetic coagulation of a dilute sol in a laminar shear flow. The analysis was confined to aggregates containing a very large number of particles. It has been shown that such a phase transition, in contrast to transitions under equilibrium conditions, may develop in accordance with either of two scenarios, the first of which leads to the formation of individual, stable, identically sized aggregates, the second to the separation of the colloid into two continuous phases with different concentrations of particles. The effective viscosity of the structurized colloid has been evaluated as a function of the shear flow rate. The kinetics of phase formation have been analyzed.
