Abstract:
A detailed investigation of the dissolution of alkali metal uranates in carbonate melts was performed. Solubilities of three alkali metal (Li Na and K) mono- and diuranates were measured between 450 and 800 degrees C in a range of alkali carbonate mixtures, and the mechanism of basic and acidic dissolution determined. The influence of CO2 and O-2 partial pressures on their dissolution was also examined. The rate of UO2 oxidation in carbonate and carbonate-based melts is controlled by a formation of a solid layer of alkali metal uranates on the surface of urania. The oxidation of UO2 by oxygen in a variety of chloride melts was followed spectroscopically. In presence of aluminium ions uranyl chloride complexes are formed, but in pure alkali metal chlorides only alkali uranates are formed. A spectroscopic study of the dissolution of the uranates in chloride melts revealed that monouranates dissolve physically but diuranates undergo chemical dissolution forming ultimately monouranate species.
